. Yahoo! Groups then reforwards the query to the entire list of subscribers, including the original questioner.
(b) Postings are welcome in either Spanish or English.
(c) When sending a query, please include full context (at least a sentence or two) for the term in question. You greatly increase your chances of getting a proper answer by providing context. If there is no context, then say so and add whatever background information may help other subscribers answer your query.
(d) To maintain the confidentiality of the translation, please remove any names or other identifying information from the context.
(e) To facilitate searches in the Translist message database, subject lines should be clear and indicate the languages involved and the term being queried (for instance, "IN>ES: disclaimer" or "SP>EN: siniestralidad"). The subject line is a very important part of the process of posting a query. It is not recommended that you place your full query in the subject line and simply refer "to the above" in the body of the message. Most mail managers quote the message you are replying too, so you can insert your reply or comments below the quoted text.
(f) When responding to a query, please be sure that you are adding new information that is truly germane to the question, and not simply repeating information already provided by other subscribers or straying off topic. Also, trim off all extraneous matter after your signature, except for the fragment of the message you are replying to for the reply to make sense. This is very important and cannot be overemphasized.
(g) Assistance should not be requested for terms that can be found in standard dictionaries. Also, you may want to search the message base to ascertain if your query has not been previously answered. Remember the list contains over 40,000 messages! You can search with Yahoo's search tool, or at The Mail Archive.
(h) In the world's largest translation services (particularly those of national governments and international organisations), it is understood that a professional translator works only into his or her mother tongue. Accordingly, Translist is intended to help native speakers in translating difficult or obscure terms into their own language. It is not intended as an aid for those who must translate into a language which is not their native tongue.
(i) Messages posted to Translist should be limited to questions and answers regarding terminology and phrasing. All other messages should be posted to our companion list called Transtopics (see below).
(j) When replying to a Digest message, do copy the subject of the message you are replying to, instead of merely replying to the Digest message. Otherwise, your posting would make little sense to other subscribers, who will see only "Digest..." in the subject line. Receiving digests is a way to avoid overloading your inbox. However, it requires that you consider that other subscribers will lose track of the thread if your reply to the Digest message, instead of substituting the proper subject for the Digest subject.
(k) Some subscribers have developed certain posting habits because they post to other mailing lists. Some of these styles may be useful and we can learn from them. However, we expect to conform to Translist's guidelines as much as possible. If your e-mail address does not contain a full name, please sign your messages with a name other subscribers can reply to. A full first name would usually do.
(l) Always start a new message for a new subject, rather than changing the subject line in a reply to a previous, unrelated message. (See Netiquette nuggets.)
Subject Matter Not Suitable For Translist Postings
(a) Translist is intended to help native speakers in translating difficult or obscure terms into their own language. Subscribers should not post queries asking for help in translating into a language which is not their native tongue.
(b) Translist is not meant to be a forum for translators offering their services or for translation agencies seeking to place work. Such messages should be posted elsewhere.
(c) Most Translist subscribers are permanent in-house staff translators, and have no knowledge of particular translation agencies or of the freelance translation market in general. Queries in this regard should not be posted on Translist. You may want to post them instead to the WPPF - WorldPaymentPracticesFree list. "WPPF is a payment practices list for translators to learn about agencies'/employers'/customers' payment routines."
(d) Messages posted to Translist should not contain advertising, chain-letters, jokes, or general chat.
(e) Virus alerts are strongly discouraged. Any non-text content accompanying messages sent to Translist (including file attachments) is stripped away before the message is circulated to Translist subscribers. For that reason, it is highly unlikely that computer viruses or worms can be transmitted via Translist postings.
Transtopics
Translist has a companion list called Transtopics for the discussion of translation-related matters other than terminology queries, such as technical minutiae, computer software, professional ethics, and business aspects.
To subscribe to Transtopics, click here to send a blank message (containing no text, and nothing in the "Subject" line); or, if you are a registered Yahoo! Groups member, you can subscribe to Transtopics through the Yahoo! Groups website.
Subscribing To Translist
There are two ways to become a Translist subscriber. The simplest is to click here to send a blank e-mail message (containing no text, and nothing in the "Subject" line). Approval normally takes less than 24 hours. If you subscribe in this way, you receive all Translist postings that are circulated by e-mail, but you do not have access to other features offered by Yahoo! Groups such as the archived files at the Translist website.
The other way to subscribe is by first becoming a Yahoo! Groups member. To do this, go to the site http://groups.yahoo.com. On that page, look for "New users" at the left-hand side of the screen and click on "Click here to register". After you have completed the registration process, go to the Translist's homepage, click on "Join this group" at the right-hand side of the screen, and follow the procedure indicated.
If you are already a Translist subscriber and wish to sign up as a Yahoo! Groups member, go to the site http://groups.yahoo.com, look for "New users" at the left-hand side of the screen, and click on "Click here to register". Once you have completed the registration process, using the same e-mail address from which you originally entered your subscription to Translist, you should find that it presents you with a listing which shows Translist as well as any other lists hosted by Yahoo! Groups to which you have signed on as a subscriber. (If that listing does not appear immediately, look for a box that says "My Groups" and click on it to get the listing.)
Important: When you go through the Yahoo! Groups registration process, be sure to untick the box alongside "Send me special offers, promotions, and research surveys ..." (unless you want to receive a lot of Yahoo!Spam).
